What is the intention of TURF?
To support the research experience of undergraduate students, enhance their research-related competencies as specified by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and ultimately create a sustainable platform at the Faculty of Health Sciences for students that are interested in research
Principles
- A student-focused and -driven forum ensuring that student research needs are highlighted to the relevant academic staff and to coordinate communication.
- All undergraduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences are welcome.
- Alignment to other structures to appropriate timelines for abstract submission, funding deadlines and exposure.
- Faculty-supported by the Faculty of Research and PH coordinator (SHSPH)
- Individual funding support will be made available for students who fulfil criteria for research and conference acceptance.
- A model for sustainability: long-term output of a research directory and protected research time for students.
Who will it cater for?
Any undergraduate student in the Faculty of Health Sciences with an interest in research or with previous research experience.
Academic staff – including postgraduate students – that have been exposed to and participated in the research process with an interest to mentor students.
What are the proposed activities for TURF?
Monthly sessions for 2016; every 2nd month in 2017. Examples of content:
- What is research and how does it fit into the medical profession and specifically undergraduate medicine?
- Protocol development, data collection and analysis;
- Report writing;
- How to apply for ethics approval and funding;
- Analysing data: available programs and software and how to use them
- Skills training
- Peer-reviewing and mentoring workshops
- Guest speakers
What opportunities are available to TURF members?
- Development of individual research projects
- Participation in existing projects
- Mentorship
- Research collaboration with students from other national and international universities
